Students develop wedding dress that can dissolve in water

Brides are always anxious for it not to rain on their wedding day, but this would particularly be the case should anyone wear a new wedding dress that can be dissolved in water.

Fashion and engineering students at Sheffield Hallam University developed the wedding dress, which can be dissolved in water so that it doesn’t harm the environment after use. It can also be transformed into five new fashion pieces.

The science involves the dress including polyvinyl alcohol, a biodegradable substance that is used in washing detergents.

Their creation is to be featured in an forthcoming exhibition, titled, a sustainable marriage, which will be shown at the university later this month.

“The students wanted to challenge the notion that a wedding dress should only be used once and aimed to explore modern society’s attitudes towards throwaway fashion,” said Jane Blohm, a fashion lecturer.
