If Oscar got Married: The Best Wedding Films
Categories: Wedding Advice For Women
So the weekend came and gone and if you’re interested in movies like me then you would’ve been getting excited for the 85th Academy Awards. Yes it was Oscar time but don’t worry, I’m not going to waste yours by running through the winners nor who was best dressed (it was Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t it? Even if she did fall over!) No, because even if you’re not one to have stayed up late to catch the ceremony, you’ll still like sitting down to a good film – and now you or one of your friends are getting married, you’ll particularly want to watch a good wedding-themed film to get you in the mood. But what are the best?
Well take your seats and grab your imaginary goodie bag, because here are some of the best wedding films out there!
Best Musical: Mamma Mia!, 2008
Starting us off with a song is a real crowd-pleaser and one that actually won some Golden Globes and BAFTA’s… but unfortunately not an Oscar. That doesn’t matter though because it makes this prestigious list for being a film any group of girls can enjoy, sing along to and maybe leave them wishing they had arranged their wedding in Greece, with Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth in attendance too.
Best Comedy: Bridesmaids, 2011
From singing to laughing, best comedy has to go to Bridesmaids! We’re mostly talking about rom-com’s here but this is about as straight out comedy as you’re going to get with it still being a girlie wedding film! I won’t ruin any of it for you if you haven’t seen it yet, but just wait until they’re trying on dresses – it’ll put you off eating anything but bread and salad for at least a week before the wedding! We also have a special love for this one because it features hen parties very heavily!
The Fairytale Film: The Princess Bride, 1987
A fairy-tale and a massive cult film, this oldie but goodie has everything a wedding-themed film night needs. Yes there’s giants, swords an evil prince, the princess and of course quite a bit of romance. It brings the laughs too so if you have overlooked this one, add it to your list of must watch films for before the big day!
One you don’t want to replicate: The Runaway Bride, 1999
A great film with Julia Roberts (one of her many wedding-centric films), but just by reading the title – this is a film you really don’t want to be replicating… at least until the happy ending anyway. Please please don’t be the real runaway bride!
Best Picture: Four Weddings and a Funeral, 1994
The biggest award of the night and one that has nominee after nominee – The Wedding Singer, My Best Friend’s Wedding and even My Big Fat Greek Wedding could have made the cut but we just had to give it to this British classic. The ultimate wedding film this one ticks all the boxes like The Princess Bride does for fairy-tale films… I mean it even has Hugh Grant and he’s a great rom-com staple!
So there you have it, now the obligatory after party is ready and waiting for you, just click here to get it started!
